Trap · reasoning move

◆ Negotiation as a weapon

Sounds like: “They're only negotiating to buy time. / The ceasefire is a trick.”

Talks, truces and agreements treated as tactics rather than commitments — by the side accused, and as a reason by the accusing side never to negotiate at all.

Signs

a quote about a truce being tactical used to prove that no agreement with a whole people is possible; ceasefire violations counted for one side only; 'they only understand force' as the conclusion.

Questions to ask

Who said it, with what authority, and did their side's policy follow it? Which violations are counted, by whom? Has any agreement between these parties ever held — and what made it hold?

Example

an Oslo-as-Hudaybiyyah quote used to reject any Palestinian state.

The mirror

the 2001 recording used to argue Israel never negotiates in good faith.

Why it works on us

  • There are documented statements on both sides describing agreements as tactical.
  • Every ceasefire in this conflict's history has been broken at some point, often within days.
  • People who were hurt after trusting an agreement have good reason not to trust the next one.
