Several sources that look independent — but cite each other or rest on the same upstream data — counted as several confirmations.
Signs
'multiple sources' with no primary source named; the same number or phrase in every report; attribution ('according to…') disappearing as you move downstream; sources that thank or cite one another.
Questions to ask
Where does this number or finding originate — who counted, how, verified by whom? Do the sources cite each other, or share their data? How many independent clusters are there, not how many sources? Does the original source say what the downstream ones say it says?

How a loop forms.
A primary figure is published with an attribution ('according to the Gaza Ministry of Health'; 'according to the IDF'). A UN agency reports it, still attributed. Media and NGOs repeat it, dropping the attribution. Academic and advocacy reports cite the media and NGOs. The number is unchanged, its origin has become invisible, and five citations now look like five confirmations. The same happens with legal conclusions: reports that cite one another and draw on the same compiled quotes appear as independent findings. Errors, once inside the loop, spread with every citation while everything still looks well-sourced.
Examples from both directions.
The apartheid reports of B'Tselem (2021), Human Rights Watch (2021) and Amnesty (2022) cite one another and share upstream NGO sources — strong primary facts about the West Bank sit underneath, but the three are one cluster. Gaza casualty figures run from the Ministry of Health through OCHA into media and scholarship; a July 2024 Lancet correspondence extrapolation was widely re-cited as a 'Lancet study'. On the other side, IDF figures for combatants killed are unverifiable and repeated by Israeli media and advocacy as fact; advocacy-watch sites cite each other the same way.
Why it works on us
- When many respected bodies reach the same conclusion, it is reasonable to give it weight — most people can't check the underlying data themselves.
- In a war zone, independent data is scarce, so everyone relies on the same few collectors; that isn't anyone's fault.
- The critics of these reports often have their own agendas and their own citation loops.
