Questions to ask
Which body exactly? With what mandate — court, political body, appointed experts, advocacy group, government? What method — witnesses, satellite data, statistics, compiled media reports? Which sources do its footnotes lead to, and do those sources cite each other (one cluster, not many)? Has any court ruled?
Example
'OHCHR says it's genocide' — in fact a Council-appointed commission's conclusion, resting on sources X, Y, Z.
The mirror
'the IDF says the hospital was a Hamas base' — a party to the conflict, whose evidence can be requested and weighed like anyone's.
What 'the UN says' usually means.
OHCHR is the UN's human-rights secretariat; it publishes the work of others. The Human Rights Council is a political body of 47 member states, with a standing agenda item (Item 7) devoted to Israel alone. Commissions of Inquiry and Special Rapporteurs are experts appointed by that Council — not 'the UN' as a whole, and not a court; members' prior public statements are worth checking, in both directions. The General Assembly passes political resolutions. The International Court of Justice is the only court among them, and on genocide in Gaza it has issued provisional measures, not a judgment. The same questions apply to the other side's endpoints: a military spokesperson, a foreign ministry, an advocacy-watch site.

Why it works on us
