Arabic and Islamic terms quoted as if they had one sinister meaning, or, from the other side, one harmless one. Each has a religious sense, a political use, and a polemical caricature.

Questions to ask
What does the word mean in its religious sense, and what does this speaker mean by it? Is the militant use the speaker's own, or is it being read into them? Would I accept the same move with a Hebrew or Christian term ('crusade', 'Amalek', 'redemption')?

'Jihad just means inner struggle', said about a group that calls its rocket fire jihad.
Five words, each with several lives.
Jihad means 'striving'. Classical law covers both the inner struggle to live rightly and regulated warfare in defence of the community; jihadist movements use it for terror against civilians. 'It only means holy war' and 'it only means inner struggle' are both wrong. Shahid means 'witness' and 'martyr'. Palestinian usage applies it to anyone killed by Israel, civilians and attackers alike. The Palestinian Authority's payments to families of 'martyrs' and to prisoners, including those convicted of attacks, are what critics call 'pay for slay'; the PA calls them welfare and in 2025 announced a move to needs-based payments ⚠. Waqf is a religious endowment, property dedicated in perpetuity. The Islamic Waqf administers the al-Aqsa compound, and Hamas's 1988 charter declared all of Palestine an Islamic waqf that no one may give up (Art. 11). Hudna is a truce, limited in time, as distinct from sulh, reconciliation and peace. The Prophet's Hudaybiyya truce (628) is cited by critics as proof that truces are tactical, and Hamas has offered long hudnas without recognising Israel. Taqiyya is a mainly Shia doctrine allowing believers to hide their faith under persecution. Anti-Muslim polemic stretches it into 'Muslims are allowed to lie to you', which is the mirror of calling every pro-Israel statement 'hasbara'.

Why it works on us
- Militant movements do use these words, openly and in their own documents.
- Most Western readers meet the words only in news about attacks, so the militant sense feels like the real one.
- Defenders of Islam sometimes answer with only the gentlest sense, which makes the militant use look hidden.
