The US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation replaced the UN's aid system with a few fortified sites in the south, run by armed contractors inside military zones. Starving people were funnelled there and shot. It was never about feeding Gaza; it was about controlling and moving its people.

Why people find it convincing
- The GHF ran only four distribution sites, all in areas under full Israeli military control, three of them in the south, with short opening hours and private American armed contractors; the UN warned from the start that the model risked being used to move the population south.
- Hundreds of people were killed near the sites. The UN human rights office recorded 994 Palestinians killed in the vicinity of GHF sites between 27 May and 15 August 2025, out of 1,760 killed while seeking food.
- Médecins Sans Frontières, whose two clinics near the sites received 1,380 casualties including 28 dead between 7 June and 24 July 2025, called the distributions 'orchestrated killing and dehumanisation'.
- The Israeli army acknowledged firing 'warning shots' near the sites on several occasions, and Haaretz reported soldiers' testimony about firing at or towards crowds.
What's true
People seeking food were killed in large numbers near the sites, and the design put them at risk.
The deaths are documented by several sources that don't depend on each other entirely: the UN human rights office's counts, hospital and clinic records including MSF's, and testimony from soldiers reported in the Israeli press. Concentrating a starving population on a few sites, inside military zones, with short opening windows, predictably produced crowds, crushes and shootings. Much of the humanitarian sector refused to work with the GHF for exactly these reasons, and UN officials called the model a 'weaponisation' of aid.

What's left out
Why the GHF existed, who fired, and what it delivered.
The GHF was set up because the UN's own system wasn't getting food to its destinations: the UN's convoy tracking recorded that most UN aid trucks in the same months were intercepted before arriving, 'peacefully by hungry people or forcefully by armed actors' (see 'Aid to Gaza feeds Hamas'). The GHF says it delivered more than 187 million meals before closing in November 2025, after the ceasefire. Who fired in each incident is disputed: the army acknowledged warning fire; the GHF and the Israeli government disputed some specific reports, for example of a mass shooting on 1 June 2025; armed gangs and Hamas operated around the sites and routes. The most-cited report, Haaretz's 'killing field' story, said in English that soldiers were ordered to shoot 'at' crowds, where the Hebrew said 'towards' them to keep them away (see 'Two languages, two stories'). The UN counts rely partly on Gaza's health authorities. And the sites produced rare footage of Gazans cheering 'Thank you, America', voices that are seldom heard because criticising Hamas in Gaza is dangerous (see 'Who can afford to speak'); the authenticity of that clip was questioned too, so it deserves the same scrutiny as any other footage (see 'The image does the arguing').

Where it leads if pressed
Deaths that must be investigated are not the same as a system designed to kill.
Killing people who pose no threat while they wait for food is grave and, where it was unlawful, prosecutable, whoever fired. 'Death trap' and 'weapon of genocide' add a claim of design: that the sites existed in order to kill or to move people. That requires evidence of intent the counts alone can't supply (see 'Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.'). The mirror is just as quick: 'the GHF exists because Hamas stole the aid' is partly true and doesn't answer why so many were killed near the sites. The useful question is the one both slogans avoid: which way of getting food to two million people in a war zone kills the fewest and feeds the most? Neither the UN convoys nor the GHF sites answered it well in 2025.
